Rare photo of a North American Blue-Muzzled Vulture. This bird of prey is noteworthy for its habit of building a faux-symbiotic trust with other birds of prey, and then taking all of the carrion and departing the area without sharing or returning any of what it was supposed to share.
Kevin Carter took the original photo in 1993, showing a child having collapsed on its way to a feeding center. When the vulture landed nearby, he was told not to touch the child due to risk of disease, so we waited and tried to scare off the bird. He won the Pulitzer for this photo, but the images were so haunting that he wound up taking his own life in 1994.
