The constitution requires the Chief Justice to preside over an impeachment trial of a president, not any official. Question is if it needs to happen if the president isnt the sitting president, which tbh I believe it shouldn't be necessary since the whole point is to stop a conflict of interest.

If you're trying someone as a President, it should be dealt with as a President. You can't try a private citizen.
