Just because it makes no sense, it doesn't mean something that is factually incorrect is the correct option (they're not impeaching him "as president", since he quite obviously isn't president)

No. He is facing impeachment as the President, not as anything else. He never held any other office to be impeached as, and you can't impeach private citizens. So he either gets the President's impeachment proceedings, or none at all.
