It has nothing to do with the numbers, everything to do with the trend. The Bull Moose party spilt the vote in 1912, then disappeared. The Republicans "split" the vote in 1856, but went on to win in 1860. Same dynamic could lead to the Republican party dying and being replaced with a Patriot Party by 2030.
That all depends on whether you think that voting matters anymore... And in that sense, if it really doesn't matter and Democrats will keep rigging the elections, then we might as well form a Patriot Party as a method of organizing - the votes don't matter anyway.
