Dementia and Alzheimer's are separate diseases.

Alzheimer's disease is an early and gradual onset of failing of mental capabilities. Starts in your 60s and lasts for around 8-10 years. Usually the mind fails well before the body. In this case, the body fails because the mind lost control over it. With this you get years of someone wandering off looking for home, and they can make it pretty far.

Demetia is late and progresses quickly. Usually the mind and the body fail proportionally. This is on a scale of 2-3 years. In my experience, it's seemed like the mind shuts down because the body is collapsing as a whole. You do sometimes get people wandering off, but it's not happening for very long before they are bed-ridden.

My moms dementia took her in just over a year after diagnosis. Last four months in nursing home having to be fed and bathed. Official cause of death listed as failure to thrive.
