From what I've read it seems like God didn't really tell people to kick back, but rather pursue righteous goals with everything you've got. Where He would step in is when people followed this in seemingly hopeless situations. Then they would miraculously win when it didn't appear to be possible. David and Goliath, red sea, etc...
I hate this line of thinking so much. I'm what you would say a learning Christian of sorts. I go to a home church with my wife and her large family. The one who leads is a retired Preacher. I'd say 99 percent conservative, however, you've got the "I'm at peace with everything I see around me right now with the Left, because it's out of my control and all is God's will so I'll go home and drink me a bit of bourbon and watch the football."
