There's a thought experiment about an Artificial Intelligence that is considered broadly harmless called: a Paperclip Maximizer. Its job: make as many paperclips as it can. To cut the story short, while this seems a harmless endeavor relative to human civilization, it isn't impossible that this Dumb but very highly focused Artificial Intelligence could consume the whole of the earth, mankind, and the entire solar system in the endeavor to produce more paperclips. More disturbing to some of us today is we believe Social Media has created no fewer than FIVE 'Click Maximizer Algorithms', all of whom share the same directive: produce more clicks that can be tied to monetized advertisements. The problem: the fastest item they zeroed in on was that Angry people click in the ways that get to ads more. And the ANGRIER they are, the more they click. Run that for about ten years and no wonder why our political discourse is so toxic. Something must be done about these algorithms. I don't know the best solution but they clearly aren't being fed the appropriate negative stimulus.

fun fact: only 1/3 of paperclips are actually used to clip papers together
I've heard that 19% of statistics are made up
60% of the time, it works every time!
At least 1/3 of those are used to try to pop open malfunctioning disk drives, or keep small chip bags closed.
>pop open malfunctioning disk drives
2001 called, it wants it's CD-ROM drive back.
