As a Brit, this is really frustrating, and not for the obvious reasons...
The Police here are next to fucking useless when it comes to real crime, they simply can't be arsed, yet they seem to have infinite resources for this shit.
I have come across plenty of other stories much the same...
Old woman in Chelsea, looks out her back window and see's two men doing over her shed/garage (old house, garage at end of the garden etc)
Phones the police, tells them about it, they reply they have nobody available.
she hangs up, calls back 2 mins later and says there are two men with guns in her shed, all hell breaks loose, 2 vans, two-armed response vehicles, and the chopper within 5 mins.
they catch the buglers etc etc, then the senior officer comes over to the old woman and says "I though you said they were armed?"
She replies "I thought you said you had nobody available?"
That made the local papers but not the nationals though intimidation.
Ha, I heard a very similar story from a friends dad. A guy breaking into his car. He calls the police. Sorry, there’s nobody available. Oh ok, then I’m getting my shotgun and going out there myself. 5 minutes later, shitloads of police turn up.
Same story in central Europe. They're really good at fining people for speeding, parking violations, car modifications and now non-compliance in regards to mask mandates and social distancing rules, but god help you if you actually need them.
Would you want to go up against armed criminals in a largely unarmed police force? Besides, your "bobbies" are paper tigers. All big and bad when they can push around a law abiders, but are complete nonces against real criminals.
Yeah I’ll take our cops over their cops. Our cops may be dicks half the time but a lot of them don’t run from a fight. For the record I don’t hate cops though I’d rather not interact with them but it’s a thankless job so I appreciate them to that extent.

That story is an old joke. It's funny, but likely never actually happened.
She should have said: 'No problem, I happen to carry a gun'. I bet the police would be there in 3 minutes.
They might ignore burglars in the shed and shoot her instead.
