I setup openvpn on my router so my entire home network is covered. I use PIA and NordVPN as a backup. My router (Asus RT-AC88U running Asuswrt-Merlin 384.19) is reasonably powered but my internet network performance takes a big hit due to the encryption. Do you know which of these VPN providers have good performance at 128 or 256 bit encryption over UDP?
Hmm, well UDP is going to be the standard for performance for any OpenVPN compatible VPN service. So that means you’re probably going to just want to optimize for best network performance which is normally relative to the capacity of the provider. That puts Nord and Express right at the top. Don’t count out Proton though as they have a very efficient network even though it’s not as expansive. I’d say stay away from any of the custom protocols that VPNs are developing themselves as well. WireGuard is probably going to be the dominant open source protocol once it is vetted.
Personally I am a fan of mullvad and protonvpn. I’ve heard from other pedes that ExpressVPN and NordVPN are both reliable and trustworthy services but I tend to stay away from the bigger services if possible for stuff like this.
I’m actually aiming to switch away from commercial VPNs and over to a WireGuard self hosted solution on a VPS paid in Monero in the near future. EU hosting at the moment probably in SE or NL but I’m keeping up to date about some of the new data infrastructure that is being built in Africa as well since they’re objectively the most likely to embrace crypto-anarchy and do that kind of hosting.
