The Crusades were a response to the Emperor of Byzantium asking the Pope for a few hundred cavalry because some miscellaneous Kurds were running bothering them, so then the Pope amassed this huge army and called it a "Holy War" to "take back" the so-called Holy Land, all because he was power hungry (and also because Spain was getting a bit too powerful so he wanted them to attack Muslims rather than other Christians).
And he didn't even help the Byzantines, he simply just bypassed them straight to the Middle East lmao
