Everyone else see's "Holy shit people are dumping money in to Gamestop, something must have happened". So they all dive in. People were assuming Gamestop got bought out or merged or something.
The people who triggered that investment surge, get out after the price soars. Everyone who tried to jump on the bandwagon without knowing what was going on, got left holding the empty bag.
