Forgot to mention they shorted more shares than actually exist.

So they need to buy them and sell them at as heavy loss more than once!

How does one short a share that doesn't exist? How can you borrow and then sell something nonexistent? Wouldn't the person buying know?

B borrows the share from A, and sells it to C. D borrows the share from C and sells it to E. So in this case there is now one share and two people that need to buy it back.
