I don't understand how any of this works. Does this somehow give Gamestop an infusion of cash to build their business with, or is just investor games? I fee so stupid for not understanding that. I understand trading stocks, I just don't understand how that affects the business when people trade a piece of paper that has already been issued. .

That piece of paper is essentially a piece of GameStop. As the stock becomes more “popular” the value of that “piece of paper” (aka piece of GameStop) goes up. You add all those pieces of paper together at their new value. Thus, the value of GameStop (market value) goes up.
