I feel like a broken record lately. Unless there are consequences for breaking the law, it doesn't matter if something is illegal.
Let's make shorting illegal. Who is going to go after anyone that does? The same people that are right now turning logic into a pretzel and seem to be breaking quite a few other laws just to get the hedge funds out of the hot water they are already in.
Laws are meaningless if they are not enforced and no one in a position to enforce the ones already on the books wants to.

We don't need to make it illegal. As we can see, markets can correct the situation. The problem is government intervention and corruption.
I highly doubt anyone will attempt quite such a brazen naked short again during our lifetimes...
