I'm going to be a dad in a few months. To a baby boy. Our first child. We both agreed he's not going to public school. Were both smart enough people to teach our son to read and do math without having to get told to feel bad for who he is.
Please do this. I spent 4 years in a private school and that's not a bad option either. But you can get sports and groups with other homeschoolers organized. My private school used to play basketball against a group of homeschoolers from a nearby town. Just throwing it out there.
I went to catholic school 5 years n we moved to jersey n they put me in public school from Jan 79 to June 79 and I BEGGED my parents to put me back in Catholic school. I went to a private college prep school for high school! Public school was full of animals!
I did it the other way. Public school my whole life until high-school. We were little hellraisers in the small private school but nothing like the public schools. I remember a kid telling me to put your keys between your fists when you're fighting, so it's sticking out when you punch someone. And a kid getting hit in the head with a big busted piece of concrete. In middle school.
It will be against the law to home school one day. And there will be a law to chip all babies.
Fortunately, we're not there yet. Wishing you joy and happiness with your new son fren. He'll learn more from you and being an outdoorsman and all the skills that entails, than sat in a room listening to propaganda.

There are so many variables that blanket advice is difficult to give, although I would say that we and many others have learned that it is often helpful and necessary to mix and match curricula/programs depending on the subject.
I'm sure you know the dishonest arguments against homeschooling, but this article is a succinct reminder to everyone of how and why the totalitarian Left wants to close this escape route from the corrupt System.

This "law" professor at an avant-garde Commie Stink Tank called Harvard advocates a "presumptive ban" on HS, because it can't be "regulated"--i.e., by Big Brother.
According to this apparatchik, HS allows the "powerful" (i.e., parents) too much influence over the "powerless" (i.e., their children)--unlike the benign, totally-NOT authoritarian public school system.
The author also doesn't like the fact that homeschooling families are often Christian (because Christianity is bad). Also because they may teach undemocratic values (which is why they need to be regulated by an all-powerful authoritarian government). The burden of proof justifying HS should be on the parents, who should have to argue their case before a (most likely left-wing) judge. (Germany has already banned homeschooling, once again taking a leading role in the spread of totalitarianism in the West.)
The author double-speaks for the entire Socialist Establishment, so it's more ominous than merely "academic." It's the rattlesnake's rattle.
Best of luck with doing the right thing for your child in the teeth of an Establishment that wants to usurp YOUR authority, as part of its campaign to destroy the nuclear family entirely.

10/22s are great guns and you'll be able to have so many memorable times with your boy and that rifle.
We homeschool as well. No school district is safe. You're making the right choice.
