The semi legal answer is because LGBTQIA++ people are considered members of a protected class by law. They are protected from discrimination due to being LGBTQIA++ legally. Being a normal American is not considered a protected class.
As for what I think about protected classes of people? All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others, I paraphrase from Orwell's 1984.
