Of course they would. Who would want to commute and babysit/wrangle your kids when they could teach from home (or any other location with sufficient internet) and get paid all the same? They could do it from some cheaper country and live like kings off the dollars (Remaining) buying power there. They don't care that kids don't learn well this way, most having significantly lower results versus in person lessons.
What they don't realize is that this is a losing proposition. If you don't need the school buildings, why not go one step further and say we don't need these teachers or their unions either? Why NOT some guy in India who will teach math better for $15 a day (or even just him teaching it on a YT video). Why NOT just drop the money from public schools into the hands of parents to do it themselves, enroll in online academies or parentally created creches/shared tutors?
