Well the handshake doesn't tell you much. You are correct that it does start looking suspicious when combined with weird links, but the handshake itself simply means the account hasn't had much activity.
It doesn't even mean that its a newer account necessarily. There are accounts that still have the handshake and are a year+ old, but they simply haven't posted or commented much. So the handshake can mean they are brand new, but it can also just mean they are just a dedicated lurker lol. That's why it's still always necessary to actually click on their name and see when they join.
Right about the handshake, I usually look at that and a URL, if there's a handshake and a weird unfamiliar URL I just go ahead and deport. Shills will get banned and noobs will learn not to post weird shit.
But yeah I've noticed those year- old handshake accounts and gotta wonder if they're like, sleeper cells or something. I know the up vote threshold to get rid of it isn't that high. Like someone just made an account for later, or something.
