I did a job once in a BP tank field. Dude running it told me that if I ever saw a map of the pipes buried in the U.S. that I would be mind blown. He said there are more miles of buried pipes that there are miles of highways.

He was not wrong - This map is only Mainline and DOT regulated it looks like or old... Mid and Western states have way more than this..

In one railroad. He owns a big chunk of BNSF. Union Pacific, Canadian National and Canadian Pacific also connect Canada to the US; CN owns the former Illinois Central from Chicago to New Orleans. CP sends traffic to the east coast through Maine.

BNSF doesn't really reach much east of the Mississippi and other carriers, CSX and NS, haul it the rest of the way.
