It's a verb-form mashup of "stalk" and "fan", although I sometimes see it used meaning to support or stand by someone/something rather than just being a fan. This is so weird and creepy to see outside of preteen blog posts on tumblr.

It's especially weird to see it being used by post middle aged men who have been outed as a pack of pedophile homos.

It is actually from the eminem song, the one about the obsessed fan.

It can be both, I guess. It probably started with the song, though, since I haven't heard it in any other context before. I'm not that smart or well read, but I would have noticed it used as a verb before the song came out.

Hell, I think the actual origin or first use as a verb, at least, is from Machine Gun Kelly in Rap Devil.

"...Now tell me, what do you stand for? (what?) I know you can't stand yourself (no) Tryin' to be the old you so bad, you Stan yourself (ha)"

Rap devil is a response to an Eminem diss of MGK... the title is even a play on Eminem’s song rap god. The song Stan is absolutely the original origin.

The verb Stan is not the name Stan. Unless Eminem has a lyric talking about being Stan'd or Stanning someone, the term, as a verb, originated with Rap Devil. It is a reference to Stan, but it was strictly a proper noun in that song.

Cindy Lauper used Bop to mean masturbation. Whether there is a song from earlier with the word bop in it is irrelevant. Until she used it that way, it meant something else.

Considering MGK is basically an Eminem ripoff of sorts I think it’s safe to say that’s still a direct reference to the Eminem song

And in the Eminem song Stan committed suicide by driving off a bridge. So Kelly says "Stan yourself", meaning kill yourself
