Take note, do they respond patriotically and talk about true American values? Ask them if what we are seeing today actually matches up with what they've just described. Did they respond negatively (Americans are fat/selfish/etc)? Ask them where they got these ideas, why they feel this way. How strongly do they feel about it? Perhaps some might not know how to respond at all in the first place, and realize they know nothing about their own country? Ask these questions out of curiosity and see where the conversation goes.

That's a good experiment. Also, ask them what traits or values Americans have in common. Even if they say something negative, it would include them too.
That's a good idea and I'd be interested to know everyone's results. We're such a nation of mixed religions, skin tones, and cultures that I'd bet there'd be answers all over the place.
