BTW at the time of the Robin Hood stories, the relatively new innovation of the Welsh Long Bow was seen as an “equalizer” that the royalty/establishment did NOT like seeing in the hands of the general population
When it was the Welsh Longbow they didn't it like it. But when they pulled a China and committed copyright infringement, calling it the English Longbow, they encouraged its use and practice. Since training a proficient longbowman could take years, they wanted to ensure they had an ample pool of competent bowmen. Culminating in the first knightclub opening in 1415 at Agincourt.
Coincidentally, I've been watching a lot of the YouTube channel Tod's Workshop lately. Great educational content about medieval arms and armor.
