I think the problem is people forgetting the point of a debate - it's not to "win" as determined by adjudicators, or to "own" your opponent. It's to convince most of the undecided people watching of the rightness of your position.
I'm not sure there's a point where debate becomes totally useless, if it can decide people on issues.
