I don't think they were Jews, they just lived under that old system until Jesus came and destroyed the old system. Probably why there's such a strong connection between Jews and Communism. They used to control everything, Christ took it away with a new value system and less authoritarian philosophy. To this day is it's the only philosophy that isn't overly individualistic or has Us/Them. Concepts must humans struggle with even thousands of years later.
