For West Africa, it was estimated at 1/3 of the population being enslaves in the 17th century. You could become a slave for not being able to pay your debt, or for a number of crimes. Also, when you were caught as a prisoner of war. It was pretty regulated who could become a slave when and how they should be treated. One of my favorite books "Travels in the Interior of Africa" by Mungo Park (Vol. 1, Vol. 2), written in 1796, gives some great insights.
