This is something I don't understand. How are stocks safer assets than cash? I know cash is weakened by inflation but stocks are so much more volatile and their value is ultimately defined by cash since that's what they'll become when you sell or get dividends. If you can afford it, wouldn't land/real estate be the best asset? I'll admit I don't really understand the stock market, it just seems like a fancier form of gambling to me and I'm put off by the risk.

This is not financial advice, but Land is good except for the taxes. It's good to be diversified in all types of assets. But it really depends on your timeframe. If you want to buy a house next year, maybe it's a bad idea to put all your money in the market because it can go down before you need your money. But if you want to retire, if a diveresified fund like VTSAX or SPY is lower in 30 years than it is now, you have bigger problems to worry about. Right now we may be in a circumstance where we may have bigger problems to worry about but beyond a certain amount of money to spend on prepping, there's not much you can do to protect your assets. If you put life savings into real estate and precious metals, you can still get robbed and sleepy joe can use eminent domain to put a windmill over your property. There is not such thing as zero risk
