SN8 had a problem with the bypass thing which is why the landing was fouled. In the SN9 landing footage the announcer said they'd do it with 2 engines and clearly only 1 of the engines was firing. Prior to this there were pieces of engine shooting out on the video.
Im guessing they had a reasonable assumption that a crash would happen but went ahead with it anyway for the data.
So a rinse and repeat of SN8?

Well its completely made out of stainless steel so it doesn't cost that much when compared to your traditional rocket
