You need a lot of shielding /hardening to protect the electronics, but it's definitely worth it once you get to the scales they're talking here.

Also, if you build spaceships in space then you avoid the costs of lifting all that material into space - which is one of the most expensive parts. This unlocks some seriously cool shit.
