One king wanted him to become archbishop of his kingdom, the then-Pope refused, some beef ensued, excommunication, few years later he assumed the papacy after death of his predecessor.
But knowing history I can't look at church any different than at the most convoluted, manipulative, overpowered former super-power
They called all the shots for a long, long time, basically deciding who's king where, while accepting bribes, accumulating enormous wealth and many times living a lifestyles of worst scoundrels. Purely shameful institution if you ask me.
