To think that armed conflict is impossible is completely ahistorical. Most likely we will not see total war, but sporadic limited armed conflict...arguably we're already there. Best outcome that could keep peace and preserve the union is just FedGov becoming less and less powerful as states say "fuck off", and FedGov can't do anything about its decreasing relevance.
