Fun fact about ky: it has 120 counties, 3rd in the US iirc, due to the framers believing that each county seat should be close enough to be able to travel to within a days ride. If you ask the average kentuckian where they live, they're going to tell you a county instead of a town or city. ("Where ya from? Over in Breck county")

Iowa has 99 counties for same reason—ride to county seat and home within a day.
