I'd give her a break on the native question and put the blame more on others that don't understand indian governments. which isn't about blood but rather whether you have an ancestor on the dawes roll and you are an active citizen of the (socialist-esque) nation (bands, tribes). most registered indians you probably wouldn't be able to id as indians.. lot of mormon looking indians out here. the easiest way to tell the legit from the non legit. the non legit are more interested in being indian. but what the whole fauxahontas scene teaches us is that the colleges and universities are corrupt as seemingly the rest of us would have to prove our dual citizenship.
