'acid rain' for instance was (and is) a very real problem that was taken care of by a massive push to reduce harmful emissions from our industries, by more than 90% in the case of sulfur.
Of course... We then moved our production to china with zero regulations.

Same for the ozon layer. HCFCs were banned in a worldwide international effort and they got it done quickly and effectively.
