at least we knew how nuclear weapons worked, this was just to make people feel better and everyone knew it. They didnt make shit up as they want along.

This actually would improve your chance of survival, if you're outside the immediate target area.

Duck and cover will help protect from flying debris due to the blast wave.

Of course if you're too close, the overpressure will kill you regardless, and if you're inside the fireball, you're toast.

oh sure, i figured if youre close enough to get hit with debris, youre gonna get a healthy radiation dose too, desks arent that good. And as far as i know, radaway hasnt been invented

You have a matter of minutes after a nuclear detonation, if you're outside the thermal pulse, before fallout starts coming down. Hiding under a desk won't protect you from the thermal pulse unless you're inside a very sturdy building.

You have flash, which will blind you. The desk can protect you from this. But if you've already SEEN the flash, it's already too late and you're probably blinded for a good long while anyway.

Then you have the Thermal Pulse which depending on distance from the detonation will be on you in a matter of minutes AT BEST. The desk won't do shit to help with this. And if you're inside a typical office building you'll have glass and other shrapnel to contend with. An old school made of bricks might withstand the pressure wave and protect you from MOST debris.

Then you have fallout. Nothing in a school will help you with this problem. You will need to be at least three or four stories off of the ground and have at least two or three stories above you to filter out radiation. That won't do anything about the immediate walls around you, however. Your DNA will be fried by gamma radiation in a day or two in a typical school building.

And before people scream, "But MUH BASEMENT". No. The basement won't protect you very well. You wouldn't have a good way in or out without exposure to radiation. You would be trapped down there for a long, long time. You expose yourself to very deadly radiation the moment you ascend above ground level. Plus, the other types of radiation from fallout can penetrate if you have less than two or three stories above you separating you from the radiation. https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x54sxft

So that is how Chuck Schumer learned to stick his head up Pelosi's ass.

I'd be more inclined to strike a funny pose against a wall, but maybe that's my morbid sense of humor

Oh look people of color. I thought they weren't allowed to go to school back then.
