I am a SAG-AFTRA member (what they call a 'must join' after making my first big moves in showbiz) and I have been saying this for years. Most actors can't afford to live in LA, let alone pay for headshots and other materials to be competitive. The fee to join is a mere $3100.00 which gets you nothing except 'the right to vote' in union elections. We 'elect' actors to do the negotiating that lawyers should do and receive no health benefits until reaching $17,000.00 in union work a year. We pay yearly dues on top of this, which pays for the health benefits of people who aren't struggling to find work, and the insanely expensive building the use as a headquarters. Beyond that, streaming services could give a shit about precedents set by the union, making sure that anyone who wants to give it an honest shot can't. To top it off, I can't tell anyone in this town how much of a hero this man has been for me, and this is icing upon icing upon icing on the cake.
