i've been saying the military have been glorified mercs for decades. even in WWII our military were merely working on behalf of the soviets and chicoms. we simply got rid of their rivals the national socialists and imperial japanese (and then our govt/military assisted mao zedong to defeat the nationalists/kuomintang chinese in the chinese civil war).
