As a side note..... conservatism allows for conspiracy theories. Mr. Conservative himself Barry Goldwater believed in alien conspiracies and was all but convinced our government was covering them up. Ronald Reagan had an astrologist. George W. Bush and Co. peddled what you could easily call a conspiracy theory (of WMDs in Iraq) among other things.
So this whole "this isn't who we are" sanctimony is not only weak its also completely false.
