Teachers make shit money. (Avg for my area is $45k).
Average class size is ~22 kids.
There are 180 school days in a year (required by state).
Average day is 7 hours.
$45,000 ÷ 180 days = $250 per day.
$250 ÷ 7 hours = $31.74 per hour.
$31.74 ÷ 22 students = $1.62 an hour per student.
~$11.34 a day per student.
Average cost of private school is $14,291 a year per student. (my state).
~$79.39 a day per student or ~$11.34 an hour per student.
Bump it to ~$22.72 a day per student and give it directly to the teacher.
That’s $90k a year, double the normal salary, nearly 3.5 times cheaper than private school, and an incredibly attractive teaching gig.
You and 21 other parents could literally hire and cherry pick any teacher you want.
Laws per state will vary but my state, Va, literally has little to no requirements on creating your own private school besides the number of days really.
People can and do do this.
However, as you mentioned, laws vary by state.
For instance, one state requires that at least 2 parents have to be on hand every day, along with the teacher, or it is a legal school, and therefore must fulfill all state school requirements.
Interesting, thanks for the feedback.
What the parents do there (my sister is involved in one of these schools), is to sign up for shifts. I think her group has to do 3 half-days a month.
