I live in a very shutdown state and walk in and out of big box stores without a mask all the time! 90% of the time no one says a word. They definitely leave you alone if you are with someone so I recommend bringing a friend if you here confrontation. Spoiler: the majority of people refusing to wear masks don't like it either so you're in good company, and this is the way we encourage others to take off the mask. Once other people see us walking around like normal, once you get enough people who aren't being yelled at or fined or thrown out, don't you think they will want to join you? And at some point the pro-maskers will be the out crowd and feel the awkwardness. We need to go back to that!

If you are nervous or it's your first time, I would recommend going to the grocery store. They tend to be the least strict. Just breeze right in the entryway and don't make eye contact with any greeters - you're not there for them anyway.

You can always wear a scarf and let it fall down once you're inside. You can keep a mask in your pocket or purse - there's nothing wrong with saying "oh sure" and putting it on if someone asks but let it be your choice!
