I recommend linux mint. Easy to install, easy to use.

I have one old computer that still runs windows 7. No updates allowed

Sounds like that old computer would be a great candidate for...

Linux Mint

Can't play tarkov on Linux, too much of a damn pain.

A VM with Windows would solve the problem.

I tried that and the resolution was garbage for some reason

From a quick google search, people seem to be able to play tarkov with STEAM::proton on linux. They say 99% of games you can play on proton. That has not been my experience personally, but others have gotten it to work.

btw that game looks terrifying because it's so realistic

Stop playing video games. Learn to do something useful.

Since you're making assumptions, I will as well. I'm more capable than you will ever be. Don't assume I don't know anything useful.

I enjoy video games, I've loved them since I was a kid. I can build a house if I wanted to, I can run plumbing, electrical, frame, sheetrock paint tape float, I can rebuild motors, diagnose almost anything, raise chickens, grow a successful garden, make anything I could ever need. I don't watch football and barely any TV, I have my AC license, about to get ham radio license, tear down and clean guns, handle them safely, very good at teaching all of these things in a way where anyone can learn. I constantly learn new things, games make me happy so I play them.

Saving this post for the tips inside. Changing over hopefully this weekend.

Totally agree. I switched to Linux Mint - Cinnamon a few weeks ago as a test using an old laptop. Works great and have had zero issues. I'm planning to move my macbook air to linux (I used to dual boot windows and mac), but I'm doing a bit more research on it.

And if you are going to continue to use Windows or Apple, at least change your search engine to https://searx.me - plenty of public ones or host your own!

Seconded. Mint is a very nice OS and it's extraordinarily reliable

I've even gotten to a point where I thought the whole thing was dead, and used a laptop to google the issue and was able to resurrect it in a way that you can't do with windows. It was one command to restore it.

Also, i recommend once you install it, you go to updates in the settings you tell it to hold back linux kernel updates. This is what got me in trouble. it was a bad update. This bad update happened once in about 17 yrs of using linux, and it was a 2021 thing that feels very much like an inside job type of thing to throw amd users under the bus.

This shouldn't scare you. A fresh install is all that's needed. Linux mint cinnamon and that's it. The lenovo laptop that I ripped windows off of and put on linux mint cinnamon 19 on (i believe tessa) works 100% flawlessly after blacklisting thinkpad drivers that were blocking wifi from working. Its actually extraordinary how good linux runs on the lenovo yoga laptop

Some tips on using linux: keep all your user files that you make...art, writings, projects, code, etc on a separate partition or separate drive, or even on an external drive if possible. Your linux system drive doesn't have to be very large, most of your space is taken up by user files and games which are in the tens of gigabyetes now for modern games.

I recommend the following open source apps

  • gimp
  • inkscape
  • install good fonts for memes from online
  • audacity
  • shutter
  • geany and plugins
  • geany themes (dark themes, for coding)
  • gnome maps (google maps alternative)
  • marble (google earth alternative)
  • QuiteRSS
  • Brave
  • terminator
  • bleachbit
  • blender
  • lshw-gtk (hardware lister)
  • hexchat
  • meld (diff viewer)
  • okular (pdf viewer)
  • qBittorrent (qt bittorrent)
  • redshift
  • stellarium
  • sticky notes
  • parcellite (clipboard viewer)
  • bless hex viewer
  • steam
  • libreoffice
  • VLC
  • youtube-dl
  • python
  • pip

The above are excellent software that have reliably served me well time and again

Happy to hear that you made the move. It's worth every bit of effort that you may have made to make the transition.

To be fair, them donating to rinos were just them donating to democrats who had infiltrated the Republican Party.

Point taken. However, the real issue becomes that Microsoft (and other corporations) have singaled out specific people and ideologies.

As for the Republican Party, its days are done.

Ubuntu is easy to use for non tech people. Https://system76.com sells laptops with Ubuntu pre installed for people who are afraid to install an OS themselves.

As soon as I get my desktop back up and running, I'll switch both it and my laptop to Mint. I used to run Mint as dual boot with Win7, and I think I still have a partition set up for Mint on my desktop. Looking into VMs now (instead of dual boot) so I can have the best of both worlds.

I have been using Linux for years, Fedora is nice, Suse has Pepe appeal, I currently run kubuntu (3 or 4 years on the same box) it is very easy to use and has a lot of software. It doesn't like office 365 very much, even for work email.
