What, legally, magically, does the flag represent?

I know this sounds like a grade 1 question. The easy answer is duh: it represents all those things in a symbol.

I guess I'm wondering why when we pledge alliegance we don't say "To the Constitution, the country and society created therefrom, and the people it protects"

Is that too many more words? A flag, to me is just a flag.

Especially now that the left is brainwashing half of our society into thinking it's a hate symbol

It represents the republic. We say “and to the republic for which it stands.”

This

More importantly, the OP's headline / question is a sad commentary on our public school system and what's being taught.

(Although I’ll give credit for reference to the spear of Longinus. )

Exactly. “To the republic for which it stands.”
