Modi government has changed regulations so that Indian agriculture is no longer centrally planned and farmers aren't subordinate to unions and trade middlemen which essentially dictate their livelihood. Under the deregulation and opening of markets, the farmers would have a greater say in what type of crops they wish to grow, what prices they will sell them for, and to whom they will sell them too. The opposition socialist party (called the Congress Party) has riled up the farmers to start to strike so they can create/blame the Modi government for agriculture crisis during muh pandemic, which they can then use to win an election. Western and Indian media have been promoting the strike because they can twist it as an anti-right wing crusade by le brave warrior leftists. China has been promoting the strike because it destabilizes India and forces them to stop focusing on border and naval disputes with China. Western leftists are using the strike to attack BJP (Modi's party, is right of center) by bringing muh muslims muh BJP is islamophobic into the mix. Sikhs are using the strike to stir up anti-Indian sentiment so they can once again try to break off from India and form their own country. Pakistan is promoting the strike to destabilize India, which would give them an advantage in taking the Kashmir region away from India in the future. Chairman Xiden's regime is attacking Modi's government over the protest because succumbing to the unions would keep a cap on Indian agricultural output and keep India from properly competing against China.

i usually check The Diplomat, News X on YouTube, and Dharma Dispatch for general Indian news. and any time I read a headline about India from a western source I assume the opposite is true and just search for primary sources to verify what is actually happening.
