It's not just power. There is no economical substrate other than petroleum to make car parts, phones, shoes, clothing, makeup...NOTHING. Go make hemp straws. Won't be able to make enough of them and most of the planet can't afford it. There is no re-set with petroleum. It's just an off switch. Turn it off most of the world is going to suffer and die.
most of the raw materials for plastics etc are derived from natural gas these days, and most of that these days is from fracking.
Oil is predominantly used for fuel, the hard one that's going to take time is A1 Jet etc, very hard to power aircraft without a jet engine currently - that said, you can run a jet engine on almost anything that will burn, so ethanol, etc could be part of the solution, and growing ethanol is relatively easy.
Back to the subject, being realistic, we are still going to be using oil for at lest the next 20 years, there needs to be significant breakthroughs in nuclear and similar to eliminate it.
Whilst I get your drift and kind of agree, it’s nothing like 95%.
other slight detail to consider is that the very best ICE cars drivetrain are ~40% efficient, EV's are in the 90%+ efficiency bracket, thy also have way better aero etc, thus their Wh per mile is way below ICE cars.
so even if all the power was from coal, it’s still a more efficient in terms of energy.
in an ideal world, need to do what was planned in the 70's, and go big on nuclear (like France did etc).
Yes I meant something like that fren.
I don't buy into the CO2-phobia either. It used to be way higher, plants were more abundant, heck we burn those plants for power right now.
Nuke is the future... or Tesla's power-generation using the Earth's magfield but that would be so abundant like air so who would finance/allow it. Meh...
Well...duh
The reason why the US wants foreign oil is to take economic control of those regions and bankrupt its ppls.
Can’t wait for landfills to be filled with used electric car batteries. Should be great for the environment.

And yet the myth of resource scarcity, 20 years from now, will remain a myth
Yup, I remember 30+ years ago being told we had only 15-20 years worth of oil left!

How many percent is coal-electricity dirtier than crude oil-gas?
Depends on what you mean?
in terms of kWh/gram CO2, coal is typically higher than CCGT (closed cycle gas turbine), how much by varies a lot, there's coal and coal.
Diesel is worse than both, assuming ICE diesel genset.
All this of course is prefaced by the assumption CO2 is a problem in the first place - which I for one, am not wedded to.
I'm all in favour of scrapping coal for power generation, as it has other issues that we simply don't need, and where we have way better options.
Coal is still required for a lot of other stuff, like smelting iron/steel, etc.
