It's not about consistency, it's about achieving an end-goal
Said something contradictory a few weeks ago? Who cares! Each person's individual integrity is not the point. "Winning" is the point. And no one "on your team" is going to call you out on it. Instead, they'll actually stand with you and contort whatever mental/verbal gymnastics are required in order to keep the focus on the "winning" message. There are instances where things may not be salvageable, but even then, that's not the point. A new suit will be put in place, it doesn't matter.
And thanks to the MSM and all of its trappings, the appearance of a "unified" message can be conjured up out of thin air. Meaning that, unless the audience is able and willing to do their own research (most of the time they're not), this too becomes a non-issue.
It seems to me this is why Repubs lose. Their mental model of personal responsibility and all of that makes it very difficult for them to think in terms of what's best "for the group/goal/win".
IMO this is what makes the MAGA nationalist/populist message so strong because it can chew gum and walk at the same time. It can stress and highlight the individual while guiding and aiming those efforts toward a common goal for our country.
EDIT: One of the most notable examples of this was Pence's handling of the electors. Rather than align himself to the bigger picture of "MAGA at all costs! We CANNOT let dems get into power!" he wandered off into the weeds and had moments of prayer and self-reflection concerning what HE felt HIS role was in all of this.
That, IMO, is what Trump means when he talks about how Repubs don't know how to win. They only know how to look after and enrich themselves. And sure, the Dems know this too, they just go about it from a different perspective. And when it comes to the "popularity contest" of one person one vote, strength in numbers is what ultimately wins the day. Well, that and rigged machines :p
