That is a very good thing, to have role models. For some reason, in the past decades society has decided that anybody with any flaw, no matter how minor relative to their accomplishments, makes any role model impossible.
I think role models are normal in human history and beneficial.

I think that Cromwell shows that there is no one more effective than a truly righteous man. When God is with you, no one can stand against you. If you want further inspiration, look into the Crusader Kingdoms. They consistently survived against great odds because of their faith. They only started to lose after they were corrupted and lost their faith.
You are completely right about his overflowing cup of blessings and forgiveness that none of us deserve. Unfortunately, we are fighting against a secular religion that offers none of that. Even if you fall to your knees and beg for mercy, they will still crush you. The only thing that this secular religion seeks is submission to their new social order - redemption is impossible. I believe that this relates to your first point, about how many in society seek to attack the great men of the past. In their view, the higher ideals of these great men stand in the way of their plans for a new social order and so their legacies must be destroyed.
