Reddit was notorious for this. Hell, I'd answer peoples' questions, help them find things, they'd thank me but no upvote. Not a big deal but upvotes are a way to keep good, healthy content going on sites like these.
It's funny but I've never used Reddit much, got on thedonald at the tail end and then migrated with everybody else. But I was thinking when I posted this that this is probably a worn out theme for Reddit users.
It's like I said to somebody else: it has nothing to do with accumulating upvotes, it's just a way that someone can engage with you and recognize your effort. Like hey I saw your comment thanks for participating in the discussion. As you say I think it promotes positive engagement.
