In 1980, Polish Patriots, led by Lech Walesa, formed a trade union, and it became a sweeping, diverse social movement (populist, in today's parlance). Poles had lived under the communist yoke since 1946. Through NONVIOLENT PROTEST, the communist regime was subsumed in 1989.
