They were lied to. Told if they left the UK they would have to leave Europe too... then England votes the UK out of Europe. Classy move.
How exactly would they be independent if they're still ruled by the EU?
It's a technicality really. Because Scotland was in the EU as a member state of the United Kingdom, if they left the UK they now become a completely new entity as far as Europe is concerned and they would then need to apply to become an EU member as just Scotland. That membership was not being guaranteed by the EU, they said it would be handled like any other new member and that made a lot of people nervous so they voted to stay in the UK so they could stay in Europe.
