Yeah if a man wants to be truly at peace in his marriage he will have sowed his wild oats. You got a reasonable itch, you better scratch it. You don’t want to have kids with someone and be looking at that door wondering what’s on the other side. There is a reason we rejected the uptight overly conservative society we use to have. Just like there is a reason we’re rejecting the overly liberal one now.
Balance is key.
Spend your twenties exploring the world around you. Settle down too quickly you will have the kind of regrets that end in divorce.
But if you’re a homely guy that can’t really get laid anyways. Then find a homely girl and make a family. You will be happier than most. You won’t have to deal with the temptation one way or another.
"There is a reason we rejected the uptight overly conservative society we use to have."
Yeah, propaganda.
I don't actually object to men sowing their wild oats, but let's not pretend that the rejection of traditional western cultures was organic.
We are on the end of a pendulum swing to the left. We will now move back. I was there when it was the other direction. The right can be pretty damn oppressive as well. I’m sure we haven’t learned our lesson and will go back to the other extreme. Pretty much a big part of history. That shift.
It would be best to be moderate. Neither right or left, but that doesn’t seem to be how it works.
We obviously agree about sowing the oats then settling down to make something of yourself. That’s the middle. That’s where real fulfillment and happiness is. Extremes build anxious angry people. Who are mad at those who are enjoying the middle. Like Solomon said, don’t be too good or too evil.
Yes, I think we do agree (well, with one caveat: I'm a woman, a wife and mother. I don't agree that "sowing my wild oats" would have been a good choice for me personally, because that's a whole different kettle of fish--for women, especially women who know they want children, it's a much more weighty decision).
