How silly of them! Everyone knows private school tuition grows on trees and mortgage and rent fairies put food on parents' tables so they can quit their jobs to homeschool.
Actual daily "book learning" time for 1st grade is about 1hr.
Add 15-20 min /day for each subsequent year.
The rest is daycare.
You definitely DO have to make an effort to include arts, music / appreciation, sports and community social engagement. Extended family, friends, church, homeschool groups can cover this latter item quite well - in fact, it has been shown that children develop intellectually and socially MUCH better when involved in multi-age groups than with single-age groups. This is one reason the one-room schoolhouses were better for our kids than the current industrial "humanist" setup.
Homeschooling is not only possible for all, it is necessary for most. Even private schools are not our friends. Had a colleague who was very proud of her kid going to a highly-ranked charter language-immersion school, who became fluent in the spanish language - but turned out a complete commie. She didn't even know enough language to read over his books.
Homeschooling doesn't need to take 8 hours a day. It could be done by working parents. I think many homeschoolers only need 2 or 3 hours to cover everything needed for the day.
